Город в центральной части штата Техас на р. Сан-Антонио [San Antonio River]. 1,1 млн. жителей (2000), с пригородами [Greater San Antonio] - 1,5 млн. человек; третий по величине город штата. Основан в 1718 испанскими миссионерами. Торгово-финансовый центр запада Техаса. Международный порт имеет статус свободной экономической зоны. Международный аэропорт. Машиностроение, нефтепереработка; пищевая и швейная промышленность. Отделение Техасского университета [ Texas (System), University of; UT at San Antonio], университеты Тринити [Trinity University], Св. Марии [St. Mary's University] и др., медицинские исследовательские центры. Симфонический оркестр, театры, Институт культуры народностей Техаса [Institute of Texan Cultures], Институт мексиканской культуры [Mexican Cultural Institute] (в городе многочисленная община американцев мексиканского происхождения [ Mexican-Americans]). В окрестностях пять военных баз, в том числе авиабазы Келли [ Kelly Air Force Base], Рэндолф [ Randolph Air Force Base] и Брукс [Brooks AFB], учебный центр ВВС Лэкленд [Lackland Training Center, Lackland AFB] - одни из крупнейших в стране, форт Сэм-Хьюстон [ Fort Sam Houston] и др. Город сыграл значительную роль в истории испанской Мексики и в борьбе за независимость Техаса [ Texas Revolution]. Место обороны крепости Аламо [ Alamo, The] в 1836. В 1830-40-е неоднократно подвергался нападениям мексиканских отрядов и индейцев. Играл ключевую роль в охране южных и западных границ США. До 1880-х важный центр скотоводства.
